The Doctor team is responsible for each pet's medical needs. A few of their responsibilities include diagnosing, educating, establishing plans of care, prescribing medications, monitoring progress, evaluating states of health, performing anesthesiology, surgery and medical procedures and interpretation of radiographs and laboratory tests. We encourage open communication between pet owners and clinic team members. Our doctor team is at the heart of patient care and provides our leadership in delivering care to your pet.

Dr. Gary Schlapp
Dr. Gary Schlapp graduated from University of Champaign-Urbana in 1976. He practiced medicine with his father for twenty years. Dr. Schlapp became the owner of Countryside Veterinary Clinic in 1995. His special interests include orthopedics and general surgery. Dr.Gary Schlapp has been married to Beverly since 1970 and they have two children, Todd and Nicole. His spare time is spent gardening, antiquing, family vacations to Sanibel, bowling, golfing, woodworking and dining out.

Dr. Christine Cozen
Dr. Christine Cozen is a 1992 graduate of Illinois State University, where she completed her Bachelors degree in Animal Science. She obtained her DVM from University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996, and has been working for Countryside Veterinary Clinic ever since. Dr. Cozen and her husband have two children, one cat named Star, and two fish. In her free time, Dr. Cozen enjoys spending time with family and friends, baking, gardening, and time outdoors.

Dr. Carolyn Clayton
Dr. Clayton graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. She is married and has one daughter. Dr. Clayton also has two dogs, Curtis and Hazel, and a cat, Maxine.

Dr. Karen Bockelmann
Dr. Bockelmann graduated from the University of Illinois in 1992, and has been with our practice since 1998. Dr. Bockelmann and her husband have two children, Matthew and Kaite. Dr. Bockelmann also has two dogs: Winston, a yellow Labrador, and Rosie, a chocolate Toy Poodle. In her spare time, Dr. Bockelmann enjoys gardening and being outdoors.

Dr. Peg Firth
Dr. Firth graduated from Colorado State University in 1999. She has an interest in feline medicine, geriatric / pediatric medicine and also preventative medicine including some alternative approaches. Prior to becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Firth spent 15 years teaching Special Ed. Dr. Firth has 5 Domestic Shorthair cats: Dusty is 19, Domino and Pix are both 9, Mace is 6, and Foggy is 7 years old and blind. She also has 2 dogs: Ben, a 7 year old black Labrador, and Willow, a 3 year old rough tri-color Collie. Last but not least, she also has a 2 year old Chinchilla named Cinder. In Dr. Firth’s spare time she enjoys gardening, traveling, and spending time with her goddaughters and friends.
